Rixt Izeboud
BMI-31
Adolphe Quetelet introduced the concept of the Body Mass Index (BMI), calculated with the formula ‘weight (kg)/[height (m)]²’. Quetelet derived the formula from European bodies only. BMI is widely used to determine if someone has a ‘healthy’ weight; stigmatising anyone outside the ‘normal range’. With ‘BMI-31’ Rixt Izeboud made the ridiculousness of BMI visible by designing 31 ceramic jugs using the formula.
Rixt Izeboud is a product designer based in Eindhoven. Her work aims to raise awareness and drive positive change. With her passion for ceramics and the use of vibrant colors, she creates pieces that are recognizable and playful.
